About Chautauqua County

 
Chautauqua County, located in the great state of New York is the westernmost county in the state. It is centered around famed Chautauqua Lake and Chautauqua Institution. Its western border is Lake Erie.
 
Residents and visitors of Chautauqua County can enjoy the rural setting, while taking advantage of its location to two major airports. One in Buffalo which is approximately 70 miles northeast and the other in Erie, PA, about 50 miles southwest. The Chautauqua County Airport also serves the county. Other infrastructure includes Interstate I-86 and I-90 which intersect in the county and connect with major eastern, Canadian and western cities and markets.
 
The climate provides for pleasant outdoor activities during the summer and snow cover for three major ski resort areas in the winter. The average summer temperature is 77 degrees and winters average 32 degrees.

Home to the world famous Chautauqua Institution and four other major resort and vacation regions, the county provides a wide variety of spring, summer, fall and winter activities. Boating, fishing, hiking, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, cycling, snowmobiling, hunting, antiquing, and art shows are just some of the activities enjoyed.

Regarding the name of the lake, legend is that Chautauqua (shah tau' qua) is a Seneca Indian name meaning "Bag Tied in the Middle". Viewed from a map it can be seen that the name fits the lake well. It is 17.3 miles long Chautauqua Lake provides activities for fishing, boating and other activities.

Chautauqua County also has some of the most affordable housing in the country, as well as excellent schools and universities, museums, churches and a wholesome life style supported through agriculture, manufacturing, education and a cultural heritage.
